WELCOME BLANKET

IS COMING TO VT!
The Heritage Winooski Mill Museum is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the Welcome Blanket project !
Welcome Blanket is a nation-wide project created Jayna Zweiman, co-founder of the Pussyhat Project. Welcome Blanket was created as a tangible way to engage the community in welcoming our newest Refugee population to America. We love that the project includes community engagement, a local textile exhibit, opportunity for cultural exchange, and support for our newest Americans!

You are Invited to Make a Blanket!

We Need Your Help!

As a symbol of welcome, the public is invited to make blankets that will be displayed and then gifted to our newest neighbors!

Since the project inception, more than 6,500 blankets from around the world have been knitted, sewn, quilted, crocheted, woven, felted and donated. Welcome Blanket exhibitions have been hosted at the Helms Design Center , Culver City, CA; Museum of Design , Atlanta, GA; Smart Museum of Art , Chicago, IL; Fuller Craft Museum , Brockton, MA.

How Does It Work? 1.From Sept- Nov, the public is invited to submit handmade blankets and welcome notes to the Mill Museum that will be gifted to our newest neighbors.

2.To amplify the message, the blankets and welcome notes get displayed at the Mill Museum (Dec. 1, ‘22 - Feb.26, ‘23)

3.We are partnering with AALV , a Burlington VT Refugee Resettlement organization, to distribute the blankets to local Refugees and new Americans in March, 2023.

Make a Welcome Blanket! Everyone is welcome to craft a Welcome Blanket. All mediums are welcome. Check out this pattern, and some wonderful examples on the Welcome Blanket website. Here are the design guidelines:

  1. 40”X40”
  2. Easy to care for and
  3. Hard to give away
(it should hurt a little bit because you love it so much!)
Please spread the word to anyone you know who would be interested in making a blanket! Thank you for your support!
